Matthew Leifheit is, in the words of Elisabeth Biondi, prolific curator and Visuals Editor at The New Yorker, a true “renaissance man of the visual world.” As a photographer, writer, and the Photo Editor at VICE magazine, Leifheit has profoundly influenced an emerging culture of young artists and thinkers. While studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, he founded MATTE Magazine, a print publication and photo journal that features one artist per issue. As Editor-in-Chief at MATTE, he has developed a strong collaborative process with photographers. MATTE is sold at Print Matter and is collected by the Museum of Modern Art library in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the International Center of Photography
In addition to being a contributing editor for Feature Shoot, Leifheit has written for such publications as TIME Magazine’s LightBox, Camera Club of New York, and Art Fag City. His own body of photographic work centers around themes of memory and personal origin. His evocative photographs maintain a vernacular snapshot aesthetic that is both timeless and modern.
