Since its inception in 2011, United Photo Industries has continued to expand and enrich the landscape of photography not only in New York City but around the globe. As the brainchild of Sam Barzilay, Laura Roumanos, and Dave Shelley, UPI is dedicated to showcasing the work of and propelling the careers of emerging and up-and-coming photographers making work locally and internationally, not only through critically-acclaimed gallery exhibitions at UPI headquarters in DUMBO, Brooklyn, but also through public art exhibits and events around the nation through their ever-growing, juried group exhibition series the FENCE, which in 2015 ran in Houston, Boston, Atlanta, and in Brooklyn in conjunction with UPI’s Photoville at Brooklyn Bridge Park. As the single largest public photography event in New York City, Photoville attracts millions of visitors each year to a collection of dozens of small exhibitions installed within repurposed shipping containers.
With a focus on community building, UPI proudly co-produces the Tokyo International Photography Festival in Japan as well as several public art shows throughout the New York area, including New York Stories in conjunction with the East River Ferry, Exploring Brooklyn, an initiative showcasing work by some of Brooklyn’s best photographers, and several FENCE projects along the Manhattan Bridge Anchorage. Additionally, UPI reaches out to and supports young people through a variety of educational programs and opportunities geared towards nourishing the next generation of image-makers.
