For Shinny, Toronto-based documentary photographer Brant Slomovic chronicles the multi-layered significance of shinny hockey, or pond hockey, in Canadian culture.
Writes Slomovic in his Artist Statement, “Shinny is the way we survive our long, cold winters. For many it defines our childhood; for others it is way of connecting with an adopted land and culture. It is so iconic and historic a pastime that we’ve chosen to place it on our currency as emblematic of who we are as a nation. Importantly, shinny unites Canadians across age, gender, race, color, and socioeconomic status.”

Each week, Feature Shoot editors showcase the work of one photographer who has applied to the Emerging Photography Awards in order to highlight the diverse array of applications we receive. This is not an endorsement of the photographer for the award.
Apply to the Feature Shoot 2015 Emerging Photography Awards here. It pays to apply early, as we will be featuring some of our favorite submissions right here and over our social media channels.
