EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHY CONTENDER: MARCO CASTELLI

These microscopic images taken by Florence-based photographer Marco Castelli appear gigantic; on first inspection the viewer would be forgiven for assuming these are astronomical photographs.

The series A Micro Odyssey stands at the intersection of science and art and the images expose the planet-like surfaces of microbes and bacteria and the unique geometrical patterns these form. Marco writes in his artist’s statement: “My intention was to use the natural geometry of bacterial colonies to enlarge and project them into another dimension, reversing all logic between big and small in the universe”.
