Emerging Photography Contender: Tony Luciani

For MAMMA, In the Meantime, Canadian photographer Tony Luciani takes an intimate look at his own mother, the process of aging, and the ties that forever bind parent and child.

Writes Luciani in his Artist Statement, “I have been a full-time painter for 38 years and who has taken up photography in the last 2. The initiative for this interest with the camera began when my elderly mother with dementia moved in with me in 2014. As sole caregiver, I have used her as my model, documenting her life with visuals stemming from our many conversations. The making of this series has given us both a purpose. For her, a past forgotten, brought back to life. For me, a connection with a mother who has introduced to me, other ways of artistic expression. Together, we have a story to tell.”
