EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHY CONTENDER: NATALIE CHRISTENSEN

Natalie Christensen is a photographer based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her minimalist, contemporary work is informed by more than 25 years experience working as a psychotherapist, particularly influenced by Carl Yung, evident in the use of shadows and dream symbols as favoured subjects.

Natalie writes in her artist’s statement: “I find my images in shopping centers, apartment complexes, and office parks. I dismantle these scenes to color fields, geometry and shadow. The places I frequent for my images are outside the carefully cultivated ideal of this city - the locations may even be viewed as ugly or plain at first glance. Much of my professional life was spent as a psychotherapist and I found that people often didn't see their own value, instead only focusing on their deficits. My photography is an extension of that work”.
